The Cabins

The Cabins are a pair of cedar-clad cabins designed by Fearon Hay: one holds the kitchen, dining, and living space with an indoor fire, the other two bedrooms and a bathroom. An outdoor fireplace sits between them. Rustic comfort in the truest sense: a modern take on the rural dockside cabin, with floor-to-ceiling glass so the bush, the estuary, and the sky are with you at the table, by the fire, and in the bath outdoors. They sleep four.

The residence

The Cabins

Two cedar-clad cabins, one for living and one for sleeping, connected by a timber deck. The living cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, dining table and wood burner, with floor-to-ceiling glass looking across the estuary. The second has two bedrooms and a bathroom. Between them, life moves outdoors: a barbecue, open-air bath and fireplace beneath the trees.

At Bluestone Encampment, each residence at Bluestone Encampment (the Cabins, Safari Tent 1 and Safari Tent 2) has its own bathroom and its own kitchen or kitchenette. When booked individually, the swimming pool and the laundry are shared with the other Encampment guests. Book Bluestone Encampment on a sole occupancy basis and the whole property and its facilities are yours alone.

The grounds

Under the trees

The Encampment opens onto an expansive lawn, made for games, long afternoons and kids running barefoot in the true Kiwi way. Native bush edges the property, with the Matakana estuary on three sides and an adventure playground tucked among the trees. The pool pavilion and laundry are a short walk away, shared with the two Safari Tents unless the Encampment is booked for sole occupancy.

Questions

Why two cabins?

The Cabins are designed as two cedar-clad spaces, a few steps apart on the same timber deck. One is for living, with the kitchen, dining table and wood burner; the other for sleeping, with two bedrooms and a bathroom. Between them are the outdoor fireplace and open-air bath, making the deck as much a part of the residence as the rooms themselves.

And yes, if it rains, you may get wet crossing between the two. Think of it as camping, just with better linen, hot water and an espresso machine.

The Cabins are always booked together as one private residence.

How many people can stay?

Four: a queen in the first bedroom and a set of single bunks in the second. Four is the limit. For a larger party, add Safari Tent 1 and Safari Tent 2, or book sole occupancy of Bluestone Encampment for twelve.

Are the Cabins private?

The cabins, the deck, the two fires, and the bath are yours alone, and the two Safari Tents sit further into the bush with their own guests. The swimming pool and the laundry are shared with them when the residences are booked separately. Book sole occupancy of Bluestone Encampment and the whole property is yours.

Is there a kitchen?

Yes, a full kitchen in the living cabin, with the dining table beside it and a second table on the deck by the outdoor fireplace for warm evenings. Pantry provisioning before you arrive and a private chef can be arranged.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The bunk room is made for them, the lawn runs from the deck, and the pool is close by. The cabins are glazed to the floor and the deck is open to the lawn, so children need the same supervision they would anywhere beside water and bush.

What are the two fires?

A wood burner in the living cabin, behind the glass, for the evenings and the cooler months; and the outdoor fireplace on the deck between the cabins, for every other evening. Both are laid ready when you arrive.
